Common Sense – now available on all kinds of formats

The text of Common Sense can now be bought over at the Smashwords website.

Amazon’s strenuous tax avoidance and the company’s attempts to establish a monopoly position in the e-book market have always sat uneasily with the book’s argument. The fact that it was only available on Kindle caused a certain amount of irritation.

So, if you want to read the thing, you don’t have to go via Amazon now.

I can see what you mean. I think you’re doing the right thing though. “Common Sense” surely has two purposes: one, to reinforce the convictions of the already converted – and a widest- and soonest-possible distribution to such a market is clearly necessary; two, to explain to the rest of the population the mechanics behind Occupy-style movements and the future they could claim for themselves (for ourselves). In the latter market, Kindle and other DRM-ed systems may be exactly what you’re looking for. Framing and context *is* important: some people, to join a movement as radically ground-breaking as – for example – Occupy, need the authoritative voice of mainstream ways of seeing and doing to give them the confidence they need.

So don’t feel bad about Kindle. Remember, you have many different niches which deserve your writing. Each to his or her own frame and context.
